A strong hardworking machine
I've worked with these machines at an old job. They are amazing, they are good hardworking machines, and can see through many things. I was generally only sewing heavy knit material with silicone bead. I highly reccomend these machines.

Good value
Sweet machine, powerful, quick and quiet. Shipped to us in 5 days after purchase and with a needle change zips thru heavy outdoor acrylic fabric using size 138 thread.

Know what you're buying!
My school has about twenty of these machines. I use them on a daily basis. They do one thing, and one thing only: Sew a straight line. But they do it better than any other machine you've ever used, and they're the epitome of simple, durable, quiet, fast, and reliable. These are INDUSTRIAL machines, permanently installed in a table top, not portable.

Excellent! Ready to go with variable speed motor. Truly a best buy with a great price, one of the best I found.

Buy the Best
"Industry Standard", "Workhorse", "Tank" ... all of these and more describe much of the Juki industrial lineup. The 8700 is a variation in Juki's single-needle, drop-feed, lockstitch line that is in wide use for good reason. It is well-made, reliable, smooth in operation, jam-free, and produces world-class stitch quality. I think the casting is attractive as well, and the working room under the arm is terrific. Buy with a servo motor! Mine was purchased with a clutch motor, unlike every other machine we own. Servos are more controllable, far quieter, and pull less power. The difference is night and day! We ran it this way for a couple of years, then finally dumped the clutch motor for a servo. Relief! These machines may be set up and tuned for use across a wide range of fabric weights and types. Be aware, however, that this kind of adjustability isn't built into industrial machines, which are typically set up for one limited operation. While eminently adjustable within reasonable use for most people, anything really out of the ordinary or difficult may require changing feed dogs, needle plates, needle bars, and adjusting or even changing the mechanism in various ways. As typically shipped and as described here, it is set up for (Singer size) needles 9-18, or medium-light to light-heavy. It takes standard industrial short-shank feet, and a selection of narrow, zipper, cording feet, etc. will cost very little. (as little as $2-$5 each, depending on supplier). And, unlike home machines, the variations in needles available is incredible. The limitations of this machine will be found when sewing exceptionally light materials, very slippery materials, heavy or thick material, materials of radically dissimilar weight or composition, technical textiles, etc. That said, ours is used for garment weight silks as well as for drapery construction. The latter can be a struggle with heavy fabrics in really thick areas (e.g., where multiple pleats join), despite ours being an "H" version of the machine set up for heavier materials. We are in the process of acquiring a compound feed machine specifically for that reason. (Which will also be a Juki) Finally, of course, this is not a portable machine! In my opinion, a single needle, drop-feed, lockstitch covers 90% or more of most people's general sewing needs. The cost is trivial compared to decent home machines these days (go shop for a Bernina ...), it will last literally beyond your lifetime, and you will never look back. At this point, we own Bernina, Pfaff, and White home machines, a Pfaff home serger, a Bernina home serger made by Juki, a Bernina coverstitch machine, a Juki industrial serger (3714), the Juki DDL8700, and an Artisan Heavy Leather Stitcher (Toro 4000). Again, we're in the process of acquiring a Juki flatbed compound feed - likely a DNU1508. I wouldn't mind a dedicated zig-zag, too, but that's a much lesser priority. You will NEVER go wrong from a brand perspective with Juki across amost their entire line. Highly recommended.
